Pia Hellenthal is a Cologne- and Berlin-based writer and director of fiction and documentary films. In 2013 Hellenthal graduated from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, with a Diploma in Media and Fine Art. Her first short fiction “Ganoven” was a gangster film without gangsters, following three bored crooks and their ambitious boss on a quest without results. An absurd search for meaning in backyards, balloon shops and bowling lanes. The film was shown at several international festivals, including Karlovy Vary, Solothurn and Oberhausen. Her graduation film “PALIM PALIM”, produced by Swiss production company DSCHOINT VENTSCHR, was set in an abandoned motel on a country road in the Swiss mountains, where six lost protagonists strangely cross each other’s paths. Beat Schlatter was playing the broke owner of the motel who was haunted by a female club of synchronized swimmers, eventually leaving him a bunch of money. The film was internationally screened and received the Prix H.R. Giger „Narcisse“ for best swiss short & the Prix Taurus for best Film. Next to her own films, Hellenthal has been working for publications like VICE on projects like the TV series “True Crime” (2016) and the documentary „Reborn Babies“ (2014) which was nominated for the Lovie Awards 2015 and licensed to international TV Stations. Currently Hellenthal is working on her debut „Searching Eva“ produced by Corso Film. The film is a tale of a modern icon, growing up in the age of the Internet and turning the search for oneself into a public spectacle. She has been working on it now for several years, following the unique life of Eva, a young Italian, redefining our understanding of identity. Her filmic approach is beyond a classical documentary, using various fictional elements and questioning what we perceive as real. Pia was chosen to take part in the 2015 Cinematch Mentorship Program and received the 2016 Gerd Ruge Scholarship from Film und Medienstiftung NRW.
